activeCollab vs. Basecamp
I recently FINALLY found a decent alternative to Basecamp. Allthough Basecamp is a very robust and well made system, it costs quite a bit (even $12/month can add up for a poor boy like me). ActiveCollab has almost all similiar features, and has updates on the horizon that will make this a definite change for me.
activeCollab is an easy to use, web based, open source collaboration and project management tool. Set up an environment where you, your team and your clients can collaborate on active projects using a set of simple, functional tools. 100% free!
We moved away from activeCollab over to Trac, I’ve found it to be much easier for me and much more effective..
Objection!!!
ActiveCollab is lacking in the usability department for me, I suggest you try goplan: http://www.goplan.org
good luck.
Hey Stevie,
Have you tried activecollab yet? I tried to install it on one of my servers and it turns out that it requires php 5.0, but the server I was installing it on only had 4.4 installed, so it wouldn’t work.
Peace,
Eric
Ya, i tried it. made a theme for it as well. ya, it requires php 5, which is something you might be able to preference in your hosting panel. it’s a great management system, and the 1.0 release promises alot of awesome improvements coming this summer.
@Stephen, “made a theme for it as well”
Could you show us a screenshot of the said theme please?
Thanks
You can consider Wrike: unlimited projects, integration with email, gantt charts and more convenient interface. Worth taking a look.
I’ve compiled quite a list of Basecamp Alternatives some of which are open-source at my Basecamp bitch site here:

Hope this helps those looking for project management solutions other than Basecamp.
